Bob's Watercolor Book Reviews: Florals

Watercolor: Florals

If you are interested in learning how to paint florals in watercolor, this is a very good book for watercolor beginners. There is a short introduction that discusses materials and then you are into learning how to pain leaves and backgrounds, flowers, arrangements and the painting outdoors. If I counted correctly, there are 24 exercises altogether.
I think this is another very good book on how to paint florals. I am big fan of the “project” books that take you step by step through the process. There are 10 floral watercolors in this book. Also, the pictures are all drawn, so all you need to do is to transfer them to your paper and you are off and running. This one is affordable and a book I would recommend. It is one of the first books I used.
This is one of the Paul Riley books I have mentioned before. I think it is terrific but it probably isn’t for beginners unless florals are what you wan to do and you like Paul’s style. He paints very loose and in an impressionistic style. If you are after realism, this isn’t your book. He does a great job of explaining the evolution of painting florals and the various brush techniques that can be used. He is a master and it can be a bit of a tough read, but it is one of my favorites and I would highly recommend it if you want to learn from one of the best.
I just love Birgit O’Conner’s work. The best thing about this book, is that it comes with a great DVD. She discusses materials, color and color mixing, the movement of water and color (she puts paint on very wet and often lifts the paper to flow the paint around the large washes, value and some step by step demonstrations.
